” The passage from one season to another, or from one year to the next, constituted for a long time a moment of crisis and risk in social and cultural life; the supernatural world was unleashed and the souls of the dead returned from the other world to punish or reward the living. And, for millennia, groups of men or true ceremonial societies, coinciding with these periods of risk, wore ritual garments that, representing demons and ancestors, guaranteed and controlled the relations between the living and the supernatural world.”
